Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, Criteria

Grim and Gritty: Maybe, depends on the adaptation. I'm pretty sure the story is partly a bildungsroman, and that may be incompatible.

Like Noir: probably not, but they could if they wanted.
Gizmo Obsession: This is very much a possible, but not a certainty. Magic users often use an electronic gizmo as a shortcut. Some of the students are very interested in these.

There is a very intricate magical system, and custom hardware and software can be very useful. However, there are two standard categories of gizmo, and variations in the user are far more relevant.

The boy's interest and aptitude for this side of things is relevant to his ability, certain events he is involved in, and his goals.

Plus, there are at least two novel fusion experiments carried out by highschool students.

The writer, I suspect, is not an engineer himself, but probably has business contact with them. How well the company can translate that is unclear, but if they are the sort to translate any R&D into gizmo stuff at the expense of character, it would be a problem.

Dead Girls: Neglecting backstory, so far as I know, out of at least one dozen girls, one, a minor character introduced in a later arc, ends up dead in that arc. Compared to how many dead men and faceless strangers, it seems likely that the author is being careful about such.

Backstory has a couple three dead girls or women, but they are deeply relevant to why certain characters grew up the way they did, and the material does not need to be covered for the main plot.

Angst: Lots that could be angsted about, but that isn't the thrust from what I gather. The boy has a habit of dropping topics with the thought of 'everyone has their own troubles' or something.

Blood and Gore: Well, they could probably fit the killing of several arcs into a single cour, if they cut out the story and characters. I've heard it estimated that a cour would fit the first two arcs, and there isn't gore enough in those to hang things on.

Character Driven Story: Maybe so, maybe very much so. I can't promise that they are people someone else would like and want to spend time with. Again, see the stories entry, assuming I ever get it finished.

Mahou Shoujo: Well, there are High school girls using magic, but I don't know that it will heavily borrow from the genre.

Harem comedy: Perhaps not, I've heard that much of the cast seems to be falling into monogamous pairings. There are some remote possibilities, but no certainties.
