Grim and Gritty: Maybe, depends on the adaptation. I'm pretty sure the story is partly a bildungsroman, and that may be incompatible.

The story takes place in 2095, and involves a boy (the irregular) and his younger but in the same year sister (the honors student) attending a magic highschool.

Nine magic highschools are funded by the government of Japan to provide vocational training and education to students, to help fill the strong demand for magic users.

The original material is apparently very dense with stories.  This may be enough that the genre could be very different depending on which ones are focused on.

This spring a Mahouka anime is due out.

I'm anticipating wanting to say something about it when Denbeste mentions the spring anime forecasts.  As this may be too much to clutter his blog with, I am going to write something ahead of time, and post it here. 

This is not a recommendation of the anime, for two reasons.  One is that I cannot know what choices will be made in the adaptation.  The possible space covered by that uncertainty likely covers areas that both Denbeste and I would like and dislike.  The second reason is that tastes differ, and I have no confidence that I can describe things well enough to clarify matter for anyone, much less Steven.

I am well aware that some of what I might enjoy is well outside of Steven's interest.

Currently, I've vague notions of writing an introduction, a list of criteria with possibilities for pluses and minuses, and maybe a listing of the different stories that can be told.
